Idaho is a blast during the summer. No matter what part of the state you’re in or visiting, there are so many things to do. While we may be in the middle of winter right now, you may be planning your next summer adventure. But before you make definitive plans, there are a few things you’ll want to know.

While long-term Idaho residents know these things, newcomers and visitors to the state might not be familiar with the finer details. So, whether you’re rafting Hells Canyon Idaho or touring the Snake River Valley wine region this summer, here are a few insider tips to keep in mind.

It Can Get Hot, Even in Higher Elevations

Summer is a curious season in Idaho. In early summer, it can be downright pleasant through much of the state. In the higher elevations during May and June, you’re still likely to find patches of snow (some spots may be completely covered). However, it can get downright hot as summer shifts into July, August, and September!

It’s good to come prepared for 90 to 100-degree heat, and that includes many higher-elevation regions of the state. Whether you’re going on a day hike or a weekend camping trip, be sure to pack plenty of drinking water and electrolytes. Even if you’re simply going on a road trip through the Snake River Valley wine region, make sure you bring water.

Be Ready for Plenty of Sun!

Where there’s heat, there’s sun. Idaho can be very sunny during the summer. From the Snake River Valley to the Sawtooths, it can be hard to escape the sun. It’s important to prepare for consistent sun throughout the day. This includes packing and wearing sun garments (clothes that help block UV rays), sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! You’ll need to reapply regularly as you sweat and if you go on any water-based adventures. It’s also easy to forget that much of Idaho is at a higher elevation, even in non-mountain regions. This can increase sun exposure risk. No matter where your Idaho adventure takes you, protecting yourself from the sun’s rays is a must.

There’s an Adventure for Everyone

Idaho is a genuine land of opportunity. In the summer, there’s an adventure for everyone. This is something to keep in mind, because as you plan your Idaho adventure now, you may be putting together an itinerary for everyone in the family or friend group. You can find everything from mountain biking to hiking.

Don’t want to put together your own itinerary? Consider booking a river rafting tour. You can go on one of the Snake River rafting Idaho loves, for example. Rafting tours can last up to a week, and there are tours that bring together several experiences beyond rafting and camping. The best tours include fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming, and more.
