Idaho’s weather can be many things during the summer. In early summer (June and July), temperatures in the higher elevations can still be mild and spring-like. Going into peak summer (July and August), things can take a dramatic shift. Idaho can get hot (90 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit), even in higher elevations.

On top of that, much of the state has low humidity, especially in the southern half. It’s a hot, dry heat and it can take a lot out of you if you aren’t prepared. Be ready with more water than you think you’ll need, pack sun protection (sun clothes, sun hats, sunglasses, sunblock, etc.), and consult the weather forecast before heading out.

If you’re spending multiple days in the backcountry, be ready for storms, too. During July and August, late afternoon and evening storms can sneak up on you, appearing in minutes, lasting minutes, and leaving you drenched. It can be helpful to pack a rain jacket shell, just in case. When you see those dark clouds, seek shelter.

Whether you already live here, you’re driving in, or flying in for your summer getaway, keep in mind that quite a bit of Idaho’s backcountry is remarkably accessible, especially in the summer.
