You love spending time in the great outdoors. As a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, or a friend of someone with kids, you want to pass that love of the great outdoors onto the next generation.

Where can you start? While we could talk about how “kids these days” are addicted to their screens and don’t want to spend time in the great outdoors, the truth is most kids love spending time outside—you just have to make plans for them.

In other words, you can start by simply taking them on an adventure. Maybe it’s an afternoon hike on a nearby trail that takes you out of town. Or maybe it’s on one of the guided snowmobile tours Idaho is known for.

Here are a few ways to foster the excitement for the great outdoors in your kids.

When They Start to Show Interest, Get Out There!

Kids can be a fickle bunch. With so many “things” vying for their attention, it can be hard to filter through the noise. When it comes to the great outdoors, you can start by taking them on smaller adventures closer to home as a first step.

However, if they show interest in going on more adventures, jump on that interest and plan longer excursions. This can apply to any of their interests, too.

As far as the great outdoors are concerned, when they bring up something they want to do, say YES! Of course, it’s a “yes” within reason. You may need to reel them in a bit, but the idea is to support them as much as you can.

Ask Them What They Want to Do

As adults, it’s easy to “drag” kids along on our adventures. While this does get kids out there, it can also backfire. Instead of bringing kids along on your adventures, ask them to put together their own plans. This can be a great approach for older kids and teens.

This goes beyond saying “yes” to things they may already want to do. It’s more about having them plan and think about what they want to experience. You might start by giving them local or regional guidebooks or pointing them to helpful websites.

You can also drop a few hints. For example, you could show them photos and videos from a Hells Canyon rafting adventure to see if that sparks their interest.

Plan and Book a Family Adventure

While spontaneous trips into the great outdoors can be a lot of fun, it can also be exciting to plan and book a family adventure. Ask them what they might want to do next summer. Again, you can hand them a few regional guidebooks and show them videos of adventures.

You can throw a few ideas their way to help narrow things down, like Snake River or Salmon River whitewater rafting.

Once you have narrowed down your options, book it! It gives kids something to look forward to once school’s out for the summer. As your rafting trip (for example) gets closer, have them plan little details, like other sights they might want to see in Idaho or the region. Keep them engaged!
