Summer vacation is right around the corner. Kids and teens will be saying goodbye to the 2024 to 2025 school year and hello to extra time on their hands. You might be looking for ideas to keep your kids active and encourage them to spend more time outdoors. You might also be looking for ways to spend quality time with your kids once they’re on break.

Why not go for an adventure? Kids and teens love adventures just as much as the rest of us. But, sometimes, it can be hard to encourage kids to pack their bags and join their parents on a road trip or camping trip. What can you do to change that? Here are a few ways to open the door to a Salmon River whitewater rafting trip with your kids this summer!

Plan a Different Kind of Adventure

Sometimes, kids get tired of the expected. If you go on the same summer vacation every year, they may be less than enthusiastic about going again this year. If your goal is to get your kids to spend more time outdoors this summer, plan for a different kind of adventure. Make it something they haven’t done, or you haven’t done as a family.

Salmon River whitewater rafting might be just what your family needs. The Salmon River cuts through some of Idaho’s most gorgeous backcountry. If it’s something you haven’t done as a family, this can shake things up. A rafting trip can be great for the whole family, especially families with older kids (aged 7 and up).

Put the Kids in Charge of Planning the Outdoor Adventure

Kids love the chance to walk their own path. Of course, as parents, we can usually only give them so much leeway. However, when you want to keep them active and having fun in the outdoors, put them in charge of planning their (and your) adventure. Pull out a map of the state and ask them where they’d like to go or throw out a few “parent-approved” adventure ideas.

From there, let them take the steering wheel. If they’re interested in a Hells Canyon rafting trip, ask them what they’d like to do on the trip. The best rafting tour companies offer adventures that go beyond just river rafting. There are opportunities to fish, swim, hike, and more on the trip. If your kids show an interest in these kinds of ideas, encourage them to go for it!

Keep the Momentum Going

Planning one summer adventure is just the start. As you put your kids in the driver’s seat to plan their summer adventures, whether it’s day hiking or four days rafting down one of Idaho’s rivers, start planning what comes next. Another way to get kids excited about spending time outdoors is by embracing that excitement.

It’s how you can keep the momentum going. That isn’t to say you’d plan more than one rafting trip (though you could). You might plan one bigger outdoor adventure together, followed by other, smaller adventures, like afternoon excursions or weekend day trips.
