Idaho’s summer whitewater rafting season may still be months away, but many of us are already daydreaming of those grand views and thrilling rapids. If you’re planning a Snake River or Salmon River whitewater rafting tour this summer, you have a lot to look forward to. It can be a fantastic getaway for families, friends, or anyone who loves spending time outdoors.

Now is the time to start planning, and although you might not be packing a bag just yet, there are things you’ll want to bring along for the ride. Your rafting tour company will take care of all the major essentials, like the raft, safety gear, camping gear, and food, but there are other items you can bring that can help you get more out of your Idaho whitewater adventure.

A Camera with Water Protection

Bringing a camera is a great way to capture memories along the way. You might want to snap pics of the family or get in a few epic shots of the sunset after a day rafting Hells Canyon Idaho. You might bring your smartphone with its excellent built-in camera or an action cam. You may even go the extra mile and bring along a dedicated DSLR camera and equipment.

No matter the type of camera, don’t forget you’ll be spending time on the rapids. If you’re on a Salmon River rafting tour, you’ll encounter class II, III, and IV rapids. Bring along a waterproof phone pouch and lanyard to keep your smartphone secure around your neck. Do the same with any kind of camera. The more steps you take to secure your camera, the better!

Serious Sun Protection

It’s summertime in Idaho, so be prepared to handle the sun! If you're going on a Hells Canyon rafting tour, you can be in direct sunlight for hours at a time. Plus, you’re out on the water, which can reflect the sun’s UV rays right back at you.

There are many ways to protect yourself from the sun. The easiest ones include packing and wearing sun protection gear, such as sunglasses and sun apparel. You can find sun T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, hoodies, shorts, pants, and hats made with materials designed to help block UV rays. Don’t forget the sunblock, too!

Comfortable, Durable Shoes

When packing for a rafting trip, it’s easy to overlook footwear. Your feet will get wet, so wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. You also want shoes or sandals that can stand up to the rough terrain in and around Idaho’s rivers and for hiking, all while being comfortable to wear.

If you have one pair of shoes that do it all, great! But it’s always a good idea to pack at least two pairs you can rely on (like boat shoes for the raft and hiking shoes for the shore). This way, while your boat shoes dry, you can wear your second pair. If you aren’t planning on hiking and plan on sticking close to camp, even a pair of flip-flops will get you by.
